This movie depicts one man's desire for, use, and ultimate rejection of simulation (Brain in a Vat) to return to an unknown fate and the harsh realities of the real world.
One of the interesting concepts in this movie is the ability to choose life in a simulation (as a brain in a vat) over real life. The simulation is started at some point earlier in the life of the person undergoing it, generating a smooth transition in memory from real life to the simulation.
The simulation is rendered using material that is available in the memory of the person in the simulation. (A direct example of this is the title of the movie. At the moment the simulation starts, the sky reflects the painting called 'Vanilla Sky', something the main character remembers from his past).
Apparently, everybody undergoing the simulation, is experiencing his own simulation. As such, it is a solipsistic simulation, with the exception of the tech support engineer, who is able to enter the simulation when problems occur.
