[edit] A fourth possibility

While the simulism argument is mostly sound, it seems to be very computer centric and neglects other potential scientific advancements and discoveries. I suggest that there is a possibility that a super advanced civilization may find that creating additional civilizations in reality is easier and more common than running simulations. Perhaps a by-product of some future energy source will be the creation of universes, or perhaps something else will - I am not trying to suggest how an advanced civilization may accomplish this, merely that they may. In such a scenario, we would still likely be the result of some advanced intelligence, but we would be real instead of a simulation.
